SUSTAIN 5S

In the Sustain phase of 5S, maintenance of prior procedures and tasks are sustained. Tasks include creating accountability systems, weekly area audits, and incentives for meeting 5S Objectives continually.

This phase ensures long-term sustainment of 5S across operations, by embedding 5S principles into the organizational culture, driving long-term efficiency, safety, and productivity.

SUSTAIN GUIDELINES

It is human nature to slip back into old habits. Sustainment ensures that new habits are promoted continually. If there is no motivation to perform new habits, sustainment will die. Take these concrete steps to ensure 5S does not fall by the wayside.

SUSTAINMENT STRATEGIES

Start From The Top
Create a Reward System
Get Everyone Involved
Let People See It

Start From The Top

5S involvement needs to start at the top-level with everyone understanding the importance and need. If teams see that management is not following 5S Steps, do you think they will continue to do it?

Create a Reward System

Host friendly competitions between the different 5S areas with a monthly reward system to the highest performers. Buying Lunch or Providing Priority Parking are two small methods of reward. It does not have to break the bank, the importance lies in appreciation for performing 5S in their jobs.

Get Everyone Involved

Long-term sustainment should be driven by a 5S Committee made up of team members and supervision from different departments. The main goal is to oversee the implementation of 5S across the site and create a standardized approach for future events.

Let People See It

Hanging posters, banners, or posting a monthly newsletter can drive constant reminders of the importance of 5S.
